GALLERY: Sundogs Out Thursday

Sundogs returned to the sky in many places across KELOLAND Thursday morning.

Viewers have sent in photos of sundogs they spotted outside.

According to KELOLAND Meteorologist Brian Karstens, sundogs are members of the halo family. You can see sundogs low and vivid on the horizon. Sundogs can be spotted other times of the year, but they are most vivid in frigid cold air. That environment supports the right kind of ice crystals needed to make the wonderful displays.

South Dakota Highway Patrol tweeted a photo of a sundog on Thursday.

We want to encourage you to send us pictures of sundogs or other sights of the winter season. Email the photos to and we’ll share them on-air and online.
