A former South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper will serve five years behind bars.

In February, Brian Biehl pleaded guilty to grand theft by law enforcement.  He admitted to stealing more than $69,000 between May 2012 and October 2016.  In court papers, Biehl told an investigator he took the money from evidence bags and kept the empty bags in a briefcase in his squad car.

Biehl was working out of the South Dakota Highway Patrol office in Chamberlain with one of the department’s K-9 officers, which is why he handled so many drug cases.

A Brule County judge also fined Biehl $10,000.
