SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — As KELOLAND braces for another snowstorm, many people are still cleaning up from last month’s system.
Heavy rain flooded basements in the Sioux Falls area. That’s bringing a flood of calls to flooring companies.
Bev Haschke is in the middle of remodeling her basement after floodwaters rushed through her window sill.
“You walk in, and you hear the squish, squish, squish everywhere,” Haschke said.
The Sioux Falls woman is replacing all of the padding downstairs and some of her carpet.
“We didn’t have standing water. Thankfully ours wasn’t as bad as others that I’ve heard,” Haschke said.
Because of the flooding, flooring companies are extra busy. At Dave’s Flooring America, they’re putting in additional hours.
“We’ve seen so many people with water in their basements. It’s just unbelievable,” Dave’s Flooring America President Dave Serck said.
Airo carpet has been a hot seller. It came on the market just a couple of years ago.
“If it gets wet, you can dry it out, and put the carpet back down. You don’t have to replace the pad,” Serck said.
Next door at Thornton Flooring that same carpet is also flying off the shelves, along with vinyl tile.
“Our traffic numbers are up about double. The number of jobs we’re looking at in a day are doubled also,” Thornton Flooring Owner Matt Thornton said.
While Haschke isn’t happy about the extra expense from the flood damage, she’s trying to stay positive. She decided to rethink a room and change it from a Minnesota Vikings-themed bedroom to a more neutral shade.
“I mean who doesn’t want to remodel, right,” Haschke said.
If you do get water in your basement from this next storm, the experts recommend removing the pad right away.
You might be able to save the carpet if there’s not too much water and you get it dried up quickly.
