Fernson Brewing Company releases Plains Beer

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Fernson Brewing Company in Sioux Falls is planning for a busy year ahead. The local business has a goal to release a new canned or packaged beer each month this year.

Their latest creation hits its tap rooms Friday and Fernson thinks it will be a big hit. Fernson’s Plains Beer came from a simple idea.

“We’re in the Midwest. People love to drink beer but they love to drink easy-drinking beer,” Head Brewer Blake Thompson said.

With Lion’s Paw Lager their best-selling creation with more than 120 barrels brewed each week, Thompson says creating a similar brew made sense.

“Why don’t we make a lighter version of something similar to that but that’s even less offending and easier to drink. Started working on this pilsner recipe and made a few on the pilot system and kind of nailed it. Let’s go big with it and make some people happy,” Thompson said.

The idea came from a successful recipe through their Seed Series program. Now they’re making it more widely available in cans.

The Seed Series pilsners that led to Plains Beer were some of the fastest selling beers they’ve ever made.

“It’s still different from like a Bud Light or Miller Lite or one of those light lagers. This is made with all malt, no rice or corn. It’s a traditional Czech style or German style pilsner and it’s just easy and you can taste what’s in it. It’s just nice on a nice summer day,” Thompson said.

62 barrels of Plains Beer are now available. Thompson says it gives people a local option to support instead of some of the bigger brands on the market.

“There’s a lot of people that love drinking local these days. It’s a growing theme here in South Dakota, especially as more breweries start popping. It’s fun getting to be a part of that,” Thompson said.

You can find Plains Beer in cans and on tap at Fernson’s two Sioux Falls locations starting Friday. Six packs will be in stores early next week.
