Fatal Hit And Run: The Search Is Over

Updated at 6:30 p.m.

A man is facing charges in connection with a fatal hit run crash near Worthing.

It happened sometime after 7:45 Wednesday night along 473rd Avenue.  That's where 34-year-old Tessa Jacobs was struck and killed by a truck.

By 6 15 p.m. Thursday, authorities announced they arrested 21-year-old Christian Dixon of Sioux Falls on first-degree manslaughter charges.

Earlier in the day, the victim's brother, Travis Jacobs, asked anyone with information to come forward.

"If you know who you are, you're going to get caught eventually, you can't keep running so you might as well turn yourself in," Jacobs said.
Jacobs says Tessa was kind and a great little sister.

"She dedicated all of her free time to helping people.  That's all she did outside of work was volunteering, helping people homeless people, veterans, elderly, animals.  That's what she spent her time doing," Jacobs said.

Investigators are still collecting evidence along side the country road north of Worthing, including a side view mirror they believe was knocked off the vehicle.

They say it's from a 1999-2006 Chevy Silverado pickup, Tahoe, Suburban or Yukon,  with right front end damage.

You can still see tire tracks in the grass that shows the vehicle went off the road and partially into the ditch before striking Jacobs, who had gone for a walk.
"The victim typically goes for a walk during the evenings and returns well before dark," Lincoln County Sheriff Dennis Johnson said.

But Wednesday night, she didn't return and that's when the family became concerned. They searched all night and into the morning hours when her body was found in the ditch not far from her home.
