Building A Baseball Field

Yankton Baseball Field

Baseball is known as America’s favorite pastime. And you’ve probably been to at least one baseball game, but maybe not one at a place quite as unique as you’re about to see.

It’s the Yankton Twins versus the Lake Norden Lakers. It’s nearly 90 degrees but it’s not stopping these fans and players from coming out to the first game at this baseball field just west of Yankton. It’s all thanks to Tyler Hanson. He’s created this field, and it’s right on his front lawn.

“I’ve always been a fan of baseball since I was a kid, always used to play out in the yard all the time with my brothers and my cousin so when I had three boys, I thought it would be a great idea to build a baseball field in our yard,” owner Tyler Hanson said.

The dream started about a year and a half ago. He built it and they came.

“It wasn’t supposed to be this big, it was supposed to start just as an infield, but it’s kind of grown to be a fairly extensive adventure,” Hanson said.

While the turf field has most everything a typical baseball field needs, Hanson says it’s still a work in progress.

“Need to get polls yet and water and electricity up here and then grass and that will be the end of it,” Hanson said.

And he will admit it hasn’t been easy getting this field built, but lucky to have people to help him.

“It’s been quite a bit of hard work trying to get everybody together, so thankfully I’ve had a lot of friends who’ve helped me out quite a bit,” Hanson said.

Hanson’s love for baseball isn’t only shown by building this field; he’s also named one of his three sons after a baseball player.

“When I was a kid I was a Detroit Tigers fan, actually named my first born son Whitaker, after Lou Whitaker who was my favorite player as a kid, and now that I have the boys we’re playing in the field all the time, I coach three teams so I have practice out here most days of the week actually,” Hanson said.

While the field still needs a few final touches, 12 year old Lake Norden player Dawson Noem is excited his team is the first to get to play at this unique field.

“We’re hitting good, pitching good and playing defense good,” Lake Norden player, Dawson Noem said.

While players are enjoying the field, family friend Sara Livingston is enjoying it from the sidelines.

“I thought they were crazy when they first announced that they we going to do this and then ideas just kept snowballing,” Sara Livingston said. “It’s exciting, it’s fun to see, I’ve grown up with baseball my entire life so it’s just awesome to see this close by and at our fingertips to play on.”

So what may have started out a just an idea by someone with a love for baseball, is now a baseball field enjoyed by people of all ages.

“This is awesome, this is what it’s all about, so this is the reason we did this,” Hanson said.

Hanson says they have more games coming up in July.
