Ellsworth Will Be Home To The Next Generation Of Stealth Bombers

Good news for Ellsworth Air Force base.  It’ll be home to the next generation of stealth bombers.

The 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force base is one of the Air Force’s two B-1 bomber wings.

On Monday, the Air Force announced budget plans for next year include keeping all current bomber bases; that includes Ellsworth.

But eventually the B-1 bombers will be replaced with the new B-21, the next generation of stealth bombers.  The new B-21 looks very similar to its predecessor; the B-2.

But the Air Force is building the B-21 to be even more stealth with more long-range capabilities.  In the meantime, the Air Force will continue to modernize the B-1s and B-2s until it’s ready to roll out the B-21.

Once that happens, Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson, who used to be the president at the School of Mines in Rapid City, says the B-1s and B-2s will slowly be retired.
