SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — In Sioux Falls, volunteers from all over KELOLAND help out The Banquet, a non-profit looking to provide those less fortunate with a hot meal.

Volunteers at the Banquet come in all forms, but sometimes the even the smallest volunteers can help make the biggest difference.

The students at Memorial Middle School often help raise money for the Banquet.

“A lot of our different fundraisers and things that we sell throughout the year at lunches will go toward us being able to then purchase the meal and serve the meal,” Student Counsil Advidor Justin Hohn said.

Last month, they helped serve food to those in need.

“They’re full of energy; they’re excited about what they’re here to do and they really love engaging with our guests as well and the guests really appreciate that,” Executive Director of The Banquet Tamera Jerke-Liesinger said.

“It’s a really great experience for our student council kids to go down – the eighth graders go down to prepare all the food… which is fun to watch them work all around a kitchen, some of them for the first time and see what kind of things they come up with and the kind of messes they get into,” Hohn said.

Just last Friday, they raised over 1,500 hundred dollars to go toward providing them with milk jugs.
This was through an event they called ‘Milk Madness.”

“My favorite part is when we sat at lunch and we watched over the money and can see all of the kids come and put money in and knowing that it’s going to a good cause,” Eighth Grade Student Counsel Member Taylor Chesley said.

“Things like that, people don’t realize, that goes a long way to help us here at The Banquet. For a lot of people who eat at the banquet, this is the only place they have access to milk,” Jerke-Liesinger said.

“I think it’s important because there are a lot of people that are in need in Sioux Falls and around Sioux Falls. I think it’s very important to help out with that. Like i said, I feel like it’s our job to do that; to help,” Chesley said.
