Deadwood Gaming Revenues Up

There are some encouraging new numbers for the Deadwood gaming industry.  New sales data for
Deadwood gaming indicates an increase in revenues for the month of August of nearly eight percent. That comes on the heals of a long dry spell for Deadwood gaming.

2018 has not been especially encouraging for Deadwood gaming until the August numbers came in. They were good enough, in fact, to make up or nearly make up for the entire year’s downtrend.

“Yes, we were very pleased with our August numbers. We were up almost seven and a half percent in
August, which put us flat on the year. So, we made up all of our decreases from earlier in the year through August. So, we’re very excited about that,” said Mike Rodman, with the Deadwood Gaming Association.

About $126 million was spent in Deadwood casinos, that’s an increase of about 7.5 percent compared to August of last year; a substantial increase for only one month.

“We certainly think this is trend that will continue,” Rodman said.

And there was also more good news from just up the road.

The City of Lead continues to see increases in its tax collections, indicating a healthy economy for
Deadwood’s sister city as well.

“Right now it’s looking like we have the best tax collected this time of year than any other year at the same time, so, we’re looking really well as far as sales tax,” said Mike Stahl, Lead City Administrator.

Stahl thinks the revenue increase is at least partially due to some positive steps both cities have taken.

“We re-branded ourselves a couple of years ago for outdoor recreation along with Deadwood. And so I
think that’s helped out quite a bit,” said Stahl.

Stahl says the presence of the Sanford Underground lab has also helped. Altogether, it’s good news for the economy of the northern Hills.
