Day For Kids Event This Week

The Boys and Girls Club of the Sioux Empire serves nearly 1,500 kids every day.

Right now, they’re getting ready for their annual Day For Kids event later this week. This is a chance for the community to have fun, and learn more about the nine sites serving the Sioux Falls area.

Stepping inside the Boys and Girls Club may look like a little chaos, but a lot of fun. However, there’s more going on throughout the day than you may realize.

“The homework help that kids get, the activities that we do. The physical fitness, the healthy lifestyles, the character building. The leadership and on top of that we want to show our facilities,” Billy Mawhiney, Director of Youth Program Development, said.

This week, the Day For Kids event is designed to showcase some of the lesser known aspects of the Boys and Girls Club.

One of the biggest things being summer and after school education with hands-on activities.

“We go out to the garden sometimes and we look at the vegetables and we grow some sunflowers. They’re very, very big,” 8-year-old Jordyn Bittner said.

Bittner says just today they were researching insects in the education room.  All of this is a way for the Boys and Girls Club to help community kids thrive.

They hope their open house this week will allow more kids to learn and possibly take part, as Fall programs get underway soon.

“There will be inflatables, soccer camps, clinics, activities. We’re going to grill up some hot dogs. So there will be some free food for everyone. It truly is open to the community,” Mawhiney said.

“We would tour them around or something, and then we would probably be their friend,” Bittner said.

Day For Kids will be this Thursday at the Boys and Girls Club on South Sneve Avenue from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
