CTE Academy Students Refurbishing Power Wheels

A dream gift for many kids this Christmas might be Power Wheels but many families can’t afford the miniature vehicles. Luckily, students at the CTE Academy in Sioux Falls have come up with an idea to help. They’re fixing up used Power Wheels to drive back to children who are less fortunate.

“The cars just got wet sanded and they’re going to go back in for a re-painting,” Braden Jorgenson said.

Jorgenson is one of a handful of auto body students working on eight donated toys this holiday season. Two will be ready in time for Christmas and will be given to children in need of a nice gift.

“I think it’s pretty cool because you get to experience painting and other stuff and as you’re doing that you get to give back to the community,” Jorgenson said.

Anthony Andersen is the class instructor. He’s proud of the project created by his students.

“They’re easy and the nice thing is it’s exactly the same as working on a car,” Andersen said.

When it comes to painting that is. Andersen says the class will also check the parts inside.

“We’re going to make sure they run good. Have new batteries, new chargers, so whoever gets the power wheel doesn’t have to put any money into them. They’re going to be basically brand new and a way cooler paint job than anyone you can buy in the store,” Andersen said.

This project won’t end at Christmas. The idea, generated by students, will continue into the future.

“Great time filler for the students and something that they’re able to do anytime they have any down time. It’s a good project and something great to give back to the community,” Andersen said.

“I like it. It’s a good opportunity to get hands on and I think it’s better for kids so they’re not sitting in a classroom all day. Kind of a break from actual school,” Jorgenson said.

Andersen says there are eight more power wheel donations ready for pick up. The teacher says the class is asking school administrators in the district if they know families who would like a refurbished toy car.
