A South Dakota woman has three months to shoot and drown rodents on her ranch to comply with local weed and pest officials.

A udge gave Susan Henderson until Aug. 27 to obey a prairie dog infestation notice from the Fall River County Weed & Pest Board. Henderson refuses to use the county’s preferred elimination method involving tablets that release poisonous gas.

The judge determined that poison could harm other animals on Henderson’s land.

The board inspected the property after Henderson’s neighbors complained about prairie dogs last June. Prairie dogs can endanger cattle and damage grass. The board ordered Henderson to control the rodents in December, but specialists say she didn’t comply.

A September hearing will revisit if Henderson has controlled the infestation
