Coin Made From USS South Dakota Battleship

With the commissioning of the USS South Dakota submarine coming up on a Saturday, a South Dakota man shared his piece of South Dakota Navy history. 

Darwin Erickson, of Revillo, sent KELOLAND News a photo of his coin made from part the USS South Dakota Battleship (BB-57). The USS South Dakota Battleship launched in 1941, was commissioned in 1942 and decommissioned in 1947. Parts of the ship were sold for scrap and parts of the ship are on display at USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial Park on West 12th Street in Sioux Falls. 

Erickson’s coin says USS South Dakota, known as Battleship “X” which was how the US Navy reported the actions of the battleship during the war to hide operative information from enemies. You can see pictures of the coin below.
