City of sculptures

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO)– If you’re an art lover, you’ll want to head downtown this weekend.

SculptureWalk will be rolling out its new pieces on Saturday.

“It’s a wonderful day that starts very, very early,” SculptureWalk Ambassador Jeff Hanson said.

SculptureWalk Ambassador Jeff Hanson says 59 sculptures will be placed downtown this weekend and the Arc of Dreams will later become the 60th.

But there’s plenty more to see in Sioux Falls than the ones that typically line the downtown streets.

“We have become the city of sculpture,” Hanson said.

From college campuses, to the airport, the artform has landed just about anywhere you look in town.

A piece called Chasing Dreams welcomes visitors to the Sanford Sports Complex.

“I think it makes people reflect on what’s important. When I see this and I look at Mr. Sanford and the kids are having fun and it’s not just about competition. It’s about having fun and enjoying life,”Sanford Sports Complex Director of Business Development Matt Ditmanson said.

No matter where you find one, it’s a part of the local art scene.

“I hear it all the time, ‘Oh my God I see so many sculptures everywhere. Do you guys do this on purpose?’ You know we do Sculpturewalk on purpose. But I think the rest of the city has done it on purpose as well. They want to add to the quality of life, the aesthetics of the city,” Hanson said.

And soon a new batch of art will add even more to the city of sculptures.

Hanson says this year there are seven local sculptors in the SculptureWalk.
