Cheese Plant Expansion Project Spurring Growth In Lake Norden

News

If you like cheese, you’ll like this news.

Production of the popular food will start ramping up at a plant in KELOLAND next year.

That’s because the Agropur Lake Norden Facility is undergoing an expansion right now.

Beau Hornig is the plant manager at the Agropur facility in Lake Norden. He’s excited about about the expansion currently underway at his workplace.

Volk: Does that mean your life is going to get a lot busier?
Hornig: My life will get busier for sure, especially during the transition into the new plant.

To put it into perspective, right now the plant produces more than 300,000 pounds of cheese per day. Once the new addition is complete, this plant will produce about 1 million pounds each day.

“We are going to triple our production,” with Agropur Tim Czmowski said.

Czmowski says it means more business for the dairy industry.

“There’s 115,000 cows currently in South Dakota and this expansion is going to require 85,000 more,” Czmowski said.

If you ask Mayor Jason Aho, the addition to the plant is a victory for the town. The expansion will add 125 jobs.

“To keep small towns alive, you’ve gotta have jobs. You can’t have kids come back after college or high school and have nowhere to go,” Aho said.

Signs of development are already popping up.

“We’ve got private investors putting up new apartments; there’s some new homes going out on the west side. I think if we take it slow, it will be good,” Aho said.

Hiring is currently underway.

The project is expected to be complete by March of next year.
