PIERRE, S.D. - State regulators Wednesday fined Smithfield Foods for wastewater violations at its Sioux Falls plant.
The $53,382 penalty covered $26,900 for violations and $26,482 for lab costs.
Ammonia levels violated the permitted daily maximum limit for seven days in August, according to the statement from the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
DENR Secretary Steve Pirner said the violations "are a very serious issue DENR does not want to see repeated."
Pirner added, "These penalties reinforce the need for permit compliance and allow DENR to recover taxpayer dollars spent to respond to the discharge."
The company operates a wastewater treatment plant in Sioux Falls for its local operations.
