Canton’s New Performing Arts Center Taking Shape

A nearly $12 million Performing Arts Center is starting to take shape in Canton. Work is supposed to wrap on the facility in the next few months with the first event taking place in November.

Drive into Canton and you’ll notice an imposing structure that’s hard to miss.

“You see it from any angle you’re coming into town. It’s really going to a be a marquee in our community,” Canton School District Superintendent Terry Gerber said.

Gerber has been watching the construction of the new Performing Arts Center closely. He says everyone from students to teachers and local residents can’t wait for it to be finished.

“This building will secure the legacy of fine arts in our community. It’s an incredible investment that the patrons of our district invested in, in our students, in our programs here at school and in our community in general,” Gerber said. “We’re very excited to have the program here.”

In the auditorium there will be 1,000 seats, 700 in the lower area and 300 in the balcony.

That’s roughly 600 more seats than the high school commons area that’s currently used for performances.

Henry Carlson Project Manager Thomas Novak says it’s a major upgrade. From an orchestra pit with a mechanical lift to state of the art sound and lighting, this building has it all.

“We got ceilings, paint, tile going in. We’re getting into the finishing stages and seeing the home stretch here,” Novak said.

The first event will be a Veterans celebration in November. As for what else will take place inside:

“K-12 concerts, music concerts, band concerts. Our theatrical productions. We also are working, we have a local fine arts council that is bringing in outside groups. We’ve got some booked already for this school year. We’re excited about that. A lot of progress going on right now in Canton,” Gerber said.

Canton football fans will have to dodge some construction materials this Friday night. The high school team hosts Sioux Valley on the field right behind the new center at 7 p.m.
