C-SPAN Awards Students In Rapid City For Documentary Entries

Students across KELOLAND are getting national attention for their video projects. On Monday, C-SPAN’s bus will pull into Pierre for an interview with the governor.

Friday it made a special stop at Rapid City’s St. Thomas Moore to award winners in the StudentCam Competition.

Students across the United States submitted 3,000 documentaries; projects put together by four St. Thomas More students are among the 150 best.

“We certainly were grateful for all the support we had along the way and definitely put a lot of effort into it, so that paid off as well,” winner Emma Kellar said.

This year’s theme is ‘The Constitution and You.’

Senior Josie O’Meara and her teammate won third prize for their documentary called ‘Cannabis Culture and the Constitution.’

“This is a really sensitive topic in society today, especially with so many states legalizing marijuana for recreational use, not to mention medical use, so we thought it would be interesting to see both sides,” O’Meara said.

Senior Emma Kellar and her teammate earned an honorable mention for their documentary ‘The Electoral College System.’

“How divisive elections have been in the past because you only hear about the most recent ones as they come along, but there are so many in the past that have happened, that we didn’t know about, and so it was interesting to learn about all those different elections,” Kellar said.

Students say it was a lot of hard work, but they learned a lot.

“I would encourage it, it’s a really good lesson, especially from the technology stand point, I’m not very well equipped, or have the knowledge of making videos and to have this understanding before going off into college is really beneficial,” O’Meara said.

3rd prize won $750 while the honorable mention won $250.  C-SPAN will visit Pierre on Tuesday and interview Governor Dennis Daugaard.
