Busy Brookings Street Getting A Makeover

News

One of the busiest streets in Brookings, SD is about to get a makeover.

6th St., the main road through town, is torn up and down to one lane in each direction. It’s a busy Memorial Day at Perkins Family Restaurant in Brookings.

General Manager Bryan Haggerty, knows this rush won’t last long.

“It’ll be tough getting here, that’s for sure,” said Brian Haggerty, General Manager at Perkins Family Restaurant in Brookings.

That’s because 6th Street is down to one lane of traffic in each direction, and it’s keeping customers out.

“There will be ways to get here, it’ll just be kind of hard,” said Haggerty.

The construction doesn’t end with 6th street, in the next few days, the intersection across the street from Perkins will be shut down for repairs as well.

Orange barrels aren’t stopping Perkins’ customer Adam Steinhauer.

“It’s been interesting,” said Steinhauer. “We make an effort to go to local businesses as is regardless.”

In the meantime, Haggerty is staying positive.

“Could have been 10 times worse,” said Haggerty.

That is, if the closures happened during the South Dakota State University school year.

“Perfect timing. For the rest of the city, they don’t think so, but I think it’s great,” said Haggerty.

Timing, something Steinhauer says, is important when making a morning commute.

“It’s added about 5 minutes, which in a community like Brookings, is a sizeable difference,” said Steinhauer.

At Perkins, they’re hoping to see a safer intersection.

“This has to be done. The accidents out here on Brookings need to quit happening,” said Haggerty.

Construction, just comes with the season.

“You know what they say, in South Dakota, there’s two seasons: winter and construction season,” said Stienhauer.

A season, that should last about 75 days. That’s how long contractors have to complete the project.
