Business Owner Scares Off Burglars By Firing Gun

Authorities in South Sioux City are investigating an incident Thursday night where a business owner fired a gun into the air to scare of potential burglars.

According to South Sioux City Police Chief Ed Mahon, officers responded to a burglary call around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday at Maria’s Fashions and Grocery at 2205 Dakota Avenue after an alarm was tripped at the business. The business owner met officers at the scene. After investigating the incident, police officers left the scene and the business owner stayed behind.

A short while later police say that up to five individuals attempted to burglarize the business. At this point authorities say the business owner fired a handgun into the air and scared the burglars away.

Police say that there were no signs of forced entry during the initial burglary and they believe the first incident only involved two people. It’s unclear what may have been taken from the store during the first burglary.

The South Sioux City Police Department continues to investigate the incident.
