A 31-year-old man is in custody, after a gun battle with Box Elder police Tuesday.
Authorities say they were responding to an incident in the neighborhood when the stand off starts.
Law enforcement say they were called to Freude Lane in Box Elder around 9:30.
“The subject had a firearm. They found the subject who then actively shot at the Box Elder Police Department officers. The Box Elder Police officers returned fire.” Special Response Team Commander Capt. Tony Harrison said.
What followed was a gunfight with police. Authorities say Justin Grant Littrell ran from house to house and yard to yard. They say he also took two hostages and a child was trapped in an upper floor of one of the homes.
“They immediately saw the threat. They were able to talk her out of a second-story window and save her from the home where the suspect was with the firearm within moments of getting here. And that’s a big deal to this community and to this county and these cities, so we recognize the deputies and the officers who were making those quick decisions,” Harrison said.
The two hostages managed to escape. After a two-hour standoff, police finally arrested the gunman shortly before noon. No one was hurt.
Littrell is facing several charges.
“Certainly kidnapping, aggravated assault, attempted murder as well, and some other various charges with the firearm,” Harrison said.
Littrell is being held at the Penning County Jail. There is no word yet on a motive.
