Growing up, most of us had a bicycle to ride around our neighborhood or on local trails. Not every kid has that experience. We met with a local organization making sure kids in tough situations get to have that care-free fun!
A bicycle is more than just a way to get around. For some, it’s part of the idyllic childhood.
“To have the pride of ownership of a bicycle, and the freedom that comes with having a bicycle,” said Every Kid Needs a Bike, Every Bike Needs a Kid volunteer, Gar Kellogg.
“I think it’s great if a kid can have a bike and these are the neediest of children and having an opportunity to put a smile on their face is great,” said Every Kid Needs a Bike, Every Bike Needs a Kid founder, Barbara-Anne Huculak.
Barbara-Anne Huculak was riding across South Dakota five years ago, when she stopped in the small town of Batesland near the Pine Ridge Reservation. While she was there she found out the community was struggling to collect bikes for area kids. That’s when Huculak decided to start “Every Kid Needs a Bike, Every Bike Needs a Kid”.
“We collect bikes all around Sioux Land, Sioux Falls, Sioux City, other places. So we’re willing to pick the bikes up if people are willing to donate them,” said Huculak.
Huculak, and her partner Gar Kellogg, take the bikes home and fix them up. Then they drive from Sioux City to Wagner once a year to meet the people who take the bikes to the children in need.
“I’ve been out to the reservation. I’ve seen how little these young kids have. In my generation everyone in my neighborhood had a bicycle. So it just seemed like a good idea to me for a young kid to have a bike,” said Kellogg.
While they’re limited by trailer size, organizers say they will keep building on this for years to come.
“It’s for a distinct group of children that are in great need, and if it grows it will continue to go to these kids,” said Huculak.
In the last few years, they’ve delivered over 100 bikes for kids out west.
