Attraction Of Axe Throwing Hits Sioux Falls

Have you ever thrown an axe before?

That might sound like a weird question, but more people are answering, “Yes” thanks to a new recreational activity.

Axe throwing is hot in big cities. Now that trend has hit Sioux Falls.

Whether you have an axe to grind with a coworker or you’re trying to hit the bullseye with a date, more people are throwing axes as a form of entertainment.

“I love getting really focused on the target and holding the axe,” Skyler Chapin said.

Escape 605 near Target in western Sioux Falls started offering axe throwing a couple of weeks ago. The company also plans to add the sport at a new downtown location next month.

“It was sweeping the nation in all of the big cities. We love bringing big city stuff to our beautiful city,” Escape 605 Co-owner Amy Stockberger said.

So how exactly does axe throwing work? You have an axe. You simply stand behind the line, aim and throw.

“It’s just a new rec. for people to do. Actually the majority of the demographic nationwide has been women. It’s a great stress reliever,” Stockberger said.

Another location in Sioux Falls will also soon allow you to throw axes. The former JJ’s near the intersection of 57th and Western is being transformed to JJ’s Axes & Ales.

“They’re small, 1.5 pound hatchets that you throw at a target about 12 feet away. You’re not talking about hurling large axe handles at tree trunks,” JJ’s Axes & Ales Owner Tom Slattery said.

Slattery hopes to open next month and hit the target with the attraction of axes.

“Once you actually sink it, it’s wonderful. It’s the best feeling. You want to do it again and again and again,” Chapin said.

Both companies say they have safety procedures, such as trained professionals watching.

There’s also a limit on drinking.

JJ’s hasn’t set its price yet.

It costs around $30 at Escape 605.
