Apple Cider Vinegar Lauded For Supposed Health Benefits


Apple cider vinegar is often used in recipes and sometimes as a cleaning product, but now more people are drinking it. Over the past several years, Bob Kirk’s health has had some ups and downs.

“I am a cancer survivor of 2 years and I did a lot of chemo and radiation and I started taking it for my digestion health,”  Kirk said.

Kirk drinks apple cider vinegar every day. Like many people, he believes it can boost his immune system and benefit his overall health.  His choice may not be the most appetizing way to start the morning for many people. Kirk recommends mixing a tablespoon with low-sodium V-8.  He says that makes it tolerable.

“My blood pressure, my digestive just my overall health, I am cancer free for 2 years. I am not going to quit taking it,” Kirk said.

While some people swear by it, dietician Tiffany Krogstad says there hasn’t been enough research on the health benefits of Apple cider vinegar. She says one thing that is known is that more does not necessarily mean better.

“It’s generally safe to recommend one tablespoon with 8 ounces of water. I would not recommend any more than 2 to 3 tablespoons throughout the day,” Sanford dietitian Tiffany Krogstad said.

Krogstad says while more testing needs to be done, she says it’s a fermented drink which means it is good for gut heath. Still, she says there can be side effects.

“Things like nausea, dizziness, upset stomach and it can actually erode your tooth enamel,” Krogstad said.

She says if you decide to try it, stick with raw, organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Stay away from pre-mixed drinks and pills because they are not FDA approved.
Even without the scientific evidence, Kirk fully believes in the benefits it has to his health, plus one other reason.

“Clint Eastwood takes it so what more would you want to do. Well if he takes it. Right if he takes it we are in,” Kirk said.

Krogstad said the biggest thing to remember is that drinking apple cider vinegar isn’t a cure all for any medical condition. She believes it could benefit your health if you take a reasonable amount as part of a healthy diet.
