Annual Garden Underway At Boys and Girls Clubs

Kids at the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire are digging in this summer.

It’s planting season at the eastside location’s annual garden. From corn to beets, to tomatoes and peppers, these kids are learning how to grow vegetables and eat healthy.

“It’s certainly a seed-to-plate program. So we bring out, we garden. The kids weed. The kids water. We do it all the way from four weeks, all the way up. We bring the kids out and experience that opportunity. Then they take this stuff and go back inside and cook with it,” Director of Operations Billy Mawhiney said.

The garden produced more than 500-pounds of vegetables last year. Extra produce is sent home with the kids.
