pierre, sd - The man who has served as South Dakota's Secretary of Education since December 2017 is moving on.
The state announced on Tuesday that Don Kirkegaard has accepted a position as superintendent of schools for the West Bend School District in Wisconsin. He will leave his current role in July.
Prior to serving as Secretary of Education, he was superintendent of the Meade County School District from 2011 to 2017. Kirkegaard also served on the State Board of Education Standards from 2006 to 2017.
The department's deputy secretary Mary Stadick Smith will serve as interim secretary for the remainder of the Daugaard Administration, which ends in early January 2019.
