School Board Candidates On Boosting Graduation Rates

Voters in the Sioux Falls school district will head to the polls next week to elect a new school board member.  KELOLAND News spoke with the four people who are running about what needs to be done to boost graduations rates in the district.

“One of the big things would be to increase attendance and also increase the proper placement of the student within the classroom,”  Carol Robinson said.

“It’s making sure that we are addressing all of the needs of all of our students in the district and engaging them and being consistent in how we are applying what is truancy, what is absenteeism,” Cynthia Mickelson said.

“Creating that spark in them, getting them to become these impassioned learners throughout their lives and kick-starting them at an early age, that’s going to get them in school more,” Dimitrios Gliarmis said.

“It could be talking to school counselors, helping them look at their future, what they’re potential can be and hopefully that will keep them engaged and get that absenteeism down,” Randy Dobberpuhl said.

You can hear more from the candidates on issues ranging from diversity in the classroom to teacher pay, on Sunday night’s Inside KELOLAND.
