Plans To Keep Sioux Falls Safe

A common question you, the viewers, sent in for the KELOLAND Mayoral Debate this week was about public safety.

Public safety is a top concern for citizens of any town, which is why it’s a hot topic for the Sioux Falls mayoral candidates.

Jolene Loetscher has proposed bringing smaller police stations to neighborhoods all over Sioux Falls, called Police Precincts. Right now, the city’s law enforcement is centrally located in downtown.

“Of course they are going to stay on the streets. We are going to put our focus on improving staffing. We know that research has shown we are at least 30 officers understaffed. That’s always a focus. But also continuing to look forward with a vision for what do we need to do to keep Sioux Falls safe as we grow,” said Jolene Loetscher, Sioux Falls Mayoral Candidate.

Paul TenHaken says Sioux Falls isn’t ready for precincts just yet, but has other plans in mind.

“Providing more training resources for the officers, removing some spending constraints that the chief has when providing those training resources to our officers. Re-empowering the PD, and encouraging them to do their job, and also doing some narcotics resources,” said Paul TenHaken, Sioux Falls Mayoral Candidate.

So where does the money for either plan come from?

“It’s small things. It’s empowering the police, providing some additional training resources in dollars. Maybe to the tune of $50 to $75,000. I mean, these aren’t huge increases but they can have a large impact for a small amount of money,” said TenHaken.

“This is smart spending. This is looking out, planning out over the next four, 10, 20 years for what our space needs are and how to best use what we already have. Versus doing what I know tax payers don’t want to do again, which is issue another bond and build another building,” said Loetscher.

Two different ideas, with the same, safety goal in mind.

On Tuesday the Sioux Falls Police Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council released a statement saying members do not support the proposal for policing based on precinct.
