Investigation Into Alleged Hacking Of SF Mayoral Candidate Continues

The South Dakota Attorney General’s office has issued an update: so far, there is no evidence of a candidate’s bank account or website being compromised.

The investigation, however, continues. Mayoral candidate Jolene Loetscher told KELOLAND News her campaign has been hacked- from campaign emails to bank accounts and social media.

On Wednesday night KELOLAND’s Dan Santella had a hard time finding someone in downtown Sioux Falls who was willing to share their views on the investigation into the alleged hacking of Jolene Loetscher’s campaign. Some didn’t even know about the allegations. Finally, he found a Sioux Falls voter who gave his thoughts on the investigation at hand.

“I think one thing that I think needs to be clear is that no one has accused Paul TenHaken of doing the hacking,” Jim Mathis said. “It’s simply that Jolene went to the police to say that something’s, they’ve been hacked, there have been a lot of attempts to hack into their stuff.”

Authorities interviewed mayoral candidate Paul TenHaken over the weekend about the alleged hacking. KELOLAND News asked him Wednesday afternoon about Wednesday’s developments from authorities.

“Honestly, relieved for the candidate, too. I mean if that really did happen, that’s unfortunate, and that would be a bad deal,” TenHaken said.

KELOLAND News also sat down with his opponent for her take.

“The investigation goes on, and as the investigators told us today, they’re continuing to issue court orders,” Loetscher said.

Loetscher says she has “no idea” who is behind it.

“We would see attempts to get into our email, where we would get notifications that the emails were not allowed to go out, we had notices that passwords had been changed, accounts made in someone else’s name,” Loetscher said.

“I would hate if it happened to me, I would hate it if happened to any campaign, because it just distracts you from doing what you’re called to do, which is run for the office, which is share with people about issues,” TenHaken said.

Don’t forget to stay with KELOLAND News next Tuesday for the latest results on this runoff election.
