A Look Inside A Fast Growing SD Business

One of South Dakota’s fastest-growing companies has expanded from one to 75 employees over the past seven years.

Bob Weisser and his son Eric can say almost anything to each other.

“No, we’re not going to do that,” Bob said.

That openness and closeness may be one of the keys to their auto body supply company’s success.

“We were an Inc. 500 company in 2014,” Eric said.

Bob started the multi-million dollar Weisser Distributing around 40 years ago. For almost 35 of those years, he drove around the region selling and delivering auto body supplies.

“I was trying to figure out how to get out of the business, maybe try to sell it, but it wasn’t really sellable,” Bob said.

That’s when his son Eric decided to give it a try. For a few months, the father and son hit the road together, but then Eric decided to incorporate online sales.

“I wanted to go full steam ahead, and he wanted to pull back and just be careful. It was a yin and yang that just worked for us,” Eric said.

“I’m not a computer guy. I pretty much hate everything he does,” Bob said.

Eric ended up winning, and you could say, so did the company. Weisser Distributing has become one of the fastest growing companies in the nation.

“We haven’t really stopped. In six years, we’ve been adding about an employee per month,” Eric said.

The business also now sells a lot more than just auto body supplies.

It has five different labels, including Get Out, which sells outdoor play equipment.

“We’re one of the biggest and most trusted sellers on Amazon. We’re one of the most trusted sellers on eBay, Jet, Walmart, Sears,” Eric said.

Eric’s mother, sister and her husband are also involved in the business. Eric says he never envisioned that growing up, but out of everything, that’s what the family man is most proud of.

“The family atmosphere and the family culture still stays here,” Bob said.

The Weissers also say that they have more customers who are trying to fix their cars themselves.  They look up how to fix vehicles on YouTube and then do the project themselves.
