SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It will be a big year for building at Avera.
Just a few months into the year, the healthcare organization has submitted building permits for four projects totaling more than a million dollars each in Sioux Falls.
KELOLAND News looks into why Avera is choosing to invest so much in 2019.
You’ve likely heard of Avera on Louise. This second main campus is the largest building project in Sioux Falls history, but that’s not Avera’s only multi-million dollar project underway.
“At Avera-McKennan we have a lot of infrastructure needs that needed to take place,” President and CEO of Avera-McKennan David Flicek said.
At Avera’s main downtown Sioux Falls campus crews are working on new operating rooms in the former ICU. The price tag is $12 million.
“We’re going to build 20 ORs. That’s four more ORs to meet the community need. The growth of Sioux Falls has been really good for us,” Flicek said.
To meet that growing need Avera is also giving its main hospital kitchen a $2 million facelift.
“The exciting thing about our kitchen is we’re going to allow our patients to actually order room service,” Flicek said.
Back at Avera on Louise, the organization has submitted two building permits this year totaling more than a million dollars each. They’re for a new Human Performance Center and an Addiction Care Center.
“Right now with our own health plan we send out 20 people a month to a different facility to receive addiction help. We really felt it was a community need to have our addiction center on campus,” Flicek said.
