31,000 Pounds Of Protein Donated To Feeding South Dakota

News

Smithfield Foods and HyVee gave bacon, ham, and other pork products to Feeding South Dakota as a part of their Helping Hungry Homes Initiative.  It’s an unusual donation to the group.

“As an organization we distribute 14-million pounds of food annually across the state of South Dakota, but seven percent or less of that product is protein,” CEO of Feeding South Dakota Matt Gassen said.

That’s why this particular gift is a great help to Feeding South Dakota.

“When we get protein, we really are not only blessed, we’re really, really excited, to get a contribution like this,” Gassen said.

The donation from will not only help families here in Sioux Falls, but will also help hungry families all across South Dakota.

“This 31,000 pounds of protein is going to help provide protein to 125,000 meals, ” Gassen said.

The Helping Hungry Homes Initiative is part of a nationwide tour by Smithfield employees, including Senior Director of Hunger Relief Dennis Pittman, who make a special effort to get to local food banks during the summer.

“Summertime we really try to hit it hard because, in a lot of cases, there are a lot of kids who normally get food at school that don’t get it during the summer,” Pittman said.

Smithfield Foods has warehouses across the country, including one in Sioux Falls so the company can always help whenever it’s needed.

“If we can give back in those communities, our employees get a chance to see what we do to try to help out all across the country.” Pittman said.
