According to the South Dakota Department of Health, Sexually transmitted diseases are the most commonly reported infectious diseases in South Dakota. Gonorrhea has increased five-fold over the past decade, Chlamydia has doubled since 2003, and Syphilis has increased 10-fold from 10 years ago. Angela Cascio is the Infectious Disease Director and the Deputy Administrator with the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion with the South Dakota Department of Health. She joined us via Zoom from her office in Pierre to give us some explanation for the rising case counts and, more importantly, how people can help slow the numbers.
