Carter Schmidt

Carter Schmidt took on a new role as Nightbeat reporter in August of 2022, but he has been part of the KELOLAND News team since June of 2020. He spent two summers in the newsroom as an intern and also worked as a reporter, production assistant and photographer before his new position while finishing up school at South Dakota State University.

Carter is a native of Colman, South Dakota, a small town about 35 miles north of Sioux Falls. He is a 2018 graduate of Colman-Egan High School and 2022 graduate of SDSU.

Throughout high school Carter was involved in various organizations and clubs including being a public address announcer and hosting “Colman-Egan Sportscenter,” a weekly sports show showcasing the school’s athletics. He also attended a couple media camps in high school — one was local and the other was JCamp 2017 in Philadelphia.

After graduating high school, Carter went north up I-29 to Brookings to attend college as a Jackrabbit. While in college, he worked as a video producer for SDSU Athletics, a health reporter for  “On Call with the Prairie Doc” and SDSU’s student media – KSDJ and The Collegian. He graduated from SDSU in May 2022 with degrees in journalism and communications.

Carter is also the owner of CS Entertainment, a mobile DJ service providing entertainment for weddings, proms, formals and other events. He started the business in 2016 as a junior in high school.

When Carter is not working, he enjoys spending time with friends and family, golfing, fishing, kayaking, trying new restaurants and new things. He is a big fan of the SDSU Jackrabbits and Minnesota Vikings.
