After a 10-1 season, Emery-Ethan's football team will play in the 9-AA state championship Friday. It will also be the final game of the program's co-op.

At least, as we know it.

In 22 years as a co-op, Emery-Ethan's success speaks for itself. A 154-56 record and three state titles -- make that four if the Seahawks win Friday.

"It's just been a great marriage between the two communities," coach Jeff VanLeur said. "People get along good, the kids get along good. We look forward to each season."

But next season, the program will undergo its most serious change in more than two decades. The Emery School District is consolidating with the Bridgewater school district, leaving some to wonder what will happen to Ethan.

But that doesn't mean the co-op has to come to an end; rather, VanLeur said it'll only make it stronger.

"Unless they would want to step out of the picture, but the way I understand it right now, we would open, gladly have them keep everything the same, and just add Bridgewater to our new school," VanLeur said. "It'll be Bridgewater-Emery new school district, but it'll still be the same old co-op. And adding the Bridgewater to it, the more the merrier, it's just going to make us better."

Ethan is a key part of the success of the Seahawks. Seventeen of this year's 34 players are from Emery, and 17 are from Ethan. VanLeur said it's an even split most years.

"You know, if it's not broke, why fix it?" he said. "And so I think the people in both towns and communities are open to the idea and I think that's what will happen."

VanLeur said talks between Bridgewater, Emery, and Ethan are on hold right now until the football season comes to an end. The potential three-school co-op will remain 9-AA. Bridgewater is currently co-oped with Canistota, which will likely move to the 9-B level on its own next season.
