GBK: Warriors Came Out To Play

After Saturday's 60-43 victory over Rapid City Stevens, Washington won its 2nd girls state basketball title in the past three seasons. Entering this year's tournament as the number five seed, no one was quite sure what to expect out of Nate Malchow's team. But all his Warriors did was come out to play.
Over the past six Class "AA" Girls State Tournaments, only once has the top-seeded team gone on to win it all - Washington in 2008.

GBK: Summit's Kneeland Breaks Tournament Scoring Record

Summit's Alex Kneeland owns the most prolific three-game performance in South Dakota girls state basketball history.  
The junior scored 29 points in the Eagles' (20-4) 41-38 loss to Castlewood (24-2) in the State B championship game on Saturday, giving her 104 points for the tournament.  That was enough to break the previous all-class record (95) set by Carla Allard of Bennett County in 1986.

Allison DeKarn scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Warriors denied Summit a repeat state title.

State A Girls Basketball: Day 3

Championship Game-Elkton-Lake Benton 65, Sisseton 46 Rachel Krogman hit 8 of 12 shots from the field and six of seven free throw attempts en route to a 22-point performance in the
victory. She also posted a game-high 16 rebounds for the Lady Elks.

State AA Girls Basketball: Day 3

Championship Game-Washington 60, RC Stevens 43
Sarah Zirpel scored 16 points, Rachel Walters had 14 points and eight rebounds and Mercede Stotesbery had 12 points and 15 rebounds to lift the Warriors (18-5) to a state title.

(4) Lincoln 38, (1) AB Central 33
Elise Maresh had 18 points and eight rebounds as Sioux Falls Lincoln beat top-seeded Aberdeen Central 38-33 in the consolation round of the South Dakota girls Class AA basketball tournament on Friday.

Stickney/Mount Vernon has outscored Dakota Valley 14-8 in the fourth quarter to post a 45-44 win in the consolation round of the South Dakota girls Class A basketball tournament.

Taylor Trohkimoinen had 20 points as Newell beat Wall 63-44 Friday in the consolation round of the South Dakota girls Class B basketball tournament.

Nicole Schlotterback and Chandler Nielsen had 12 points apiece as eighth-seeded Sioux Falls O'Gorman upset top-seed Aberdeen Central 44-41 in overtime Thursday at the South Dakota girls Class AA basketball tournament.

Sisseton broke open a close game in the second half and cruised to a 45-26 win over Dakota Valley Thursday in the first round of the South Dakota girls Class A basketball tournament.

(8) Highmore/Harrold 67, (1) Newell 55
Holly Hamlin led all scorers with 20 points and Bailey Kusser and Logan Cowan had double-doubles as Highmore/Harrold beat Newell 67-55 Thursday in the South Dakota girls Class B basketball tournament.

GBK: Elkton-Lake Benton 'A' Class Above

Elkton-Lake Benton is no stranger to competing at the state tournament, but they are new to the Class A tournament. After finishing runner-up in Class B last year, The Lady Elks became the first team since the three-class system went into place in 1985 to make the B and A tournaments in consecutive years.

GBK: Washington Girls Have 'Warrior Will'

The Washington girls rolled through districts to earn their third straight trip to the state tournament. And while this year's team hasn't been as dominant, they've shown that same Warrior will.
Over the last three seasons, Washington has boasted one of the most successful girls basketball programs in the state.

With no varsity experience returning from last year's state championship team, it figured to be a rough season for the Lincoln boys. But one very imporant person had reason to believe. And that confidence is starting to be rewarded.
Before the season first year head coach Jeff Halseth conceded that his Patriots would take some lumps.

SDHSAA To Sanction Soccer In 2012

Today the South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors voted to sanction soccer as a high school sport beginning in the fall of 2012.
Soccer has been played as a club sport in the schools since 1997. Administration of the programs\ has been under the South Dakota Soccer Association.

HSWR: Redfield Looking To Make Statement In Class B

The last time Redfield won a state wrestling championship in 1991, no one on the current Pheasants roster was even born. But after coming up just short in 2009, Redfield's determined to make a statement this weekend. 
"Everyone can hear (coach) Fran," Redfield junior Brady Edgar said.  "He's known for talking." 

"That is my style," Redfield head coach Fran Esser said.  "I'm a vocal person.

HSFB: Concussion Rule Revised, Strengthened

Effective with the 2010 high school football season, any player who shows signs, symptoms or behaviors associated with a concussion must be removed from the game and shall not return to play until cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.
The concussion rule was one of 12 changes approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Football Rules Committee at its meeting last month in Indianapolis.

Mitchell May Lose Gymnastics Program

One of the state's top gymnastics programs could soon be wiped out. The Mitchell School District is strongly considering dropping it's program, which won back-to-back state titles in 2007 and 2008, in favor of competitive cheer and dance.
Mitchell superintendent Joe Graves says the move would provide more students with extracurricular opportunities.
