Jay Trobec, Ph.D.
I consider myself extremely fortunate to have such an interesting and rewarding job. Others may say their job is different every day, but mine really is!
Unlike my colleagues, who claim they decided on a weather career during childhood, I started my television career very differently. I was a sportscaster in North Dakota, and then moved to KELO to be a newsman in 1985. I never imagined I would still be here 20+ years later, and still be working with several of the people I met the first time I walked into the "KELO-LAND" building.
In my spare time, I enjoy refereeing and playing soccer. I also love to travel to Britain and Europe, and go there quite often for weather conferences such as the European Meterological Society meeting, and the annual "Forum International de la Météo" in France. Over the years, I have become friends with many of my television weather colleagues from around the world. They are some of the most fascinating people you will ever meet.
My formal credentials include the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation from the American Meteorological Society, and National Weather Association Broadcast Seal of Approval. My diplomas are from St. John's University (B.A.), Mississippi State University (M.A.), and South Dakota State University (Doctorate in Atmospheric, Environmental, and Water Resources). But my most important title is still "Dad" – to daughters Amanda and Karissa, with wife Rebecca.
