David Brown
I like sports. I also like to talk about sports. I think I found the right job. My story starts at the beginning of my sophomore year at Apple Valley High School in 2001. My freshman English teacher, Joe Wycoff, encouraged me to try out for the debate team. Once I made the team, the rest was history.
Joe felt that I had a gift. While I remained skeptical at first, I gained more confidence after winning several local debate tournaments. I was lucky to find my niche in public speaking and have a fun time traveling and competing at invitationals across the United States throughout high school. I graduated from Apple Valley in 2004 and knew that I wanted to be a television sports journalist.
I attended the University of Minnesota and graduated in May 2008 with a double major in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science. During my time at college, I was a debate coach back at my alma mater, Apple Valley. In addition to coaching, I worked a variety of internships, including KFAN sports radio and KARE-TV. While at KFAN and KARE, I got the chance to attend a variety of Minnesota sporting events and interview some of the most famous athletes in the state. Both internships re-affirmed my love and passion for sports journalism. I joined the KELOLAND team in July 2008.
Oddly enough, as a Minnesotan, my favorite sport is not hockey, but basketball. I grew up watching the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan, so that got me hooked pretty easily. Along with the Bulls, I still root for all the local Minnesota teams (and yes, that includes Gopher football).
Away from work, I enjoy playing basketball and watching movies. My favorite sports movie of all-time is the 1994 classic, Little Big League. For those who are unfamiliar, Little Big League is the story of a 12-year old who becomes the manager of the Minnesota Twins. I highly recommend it for both its subtle humor and instantly quotable lines.
I’m excited to be a part of the KELOLAND News team and am looking forward to getting to know the area better. If you have a story idea, please e-mail me at dbrown@keloland.com.
