Breastfeeding Benefits For Mom
April 23, 2009, 5:17 PM
We're used to hearing about the benefits a baby gets from breastfeeding. But new research shows it can also be heart-healthy for Mom, lowering the risk of both heart attack and stroke.
The study shows even if a woman had breastfed for just one month, there was less risk of diabetes, high-cholesterol and high blood pressure, all risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Researchers say this finding is especially critical because heart disease is the leading cause of death for women. Women who breastfed for more than a year saw even greater results; their chances of having a heart attack, stroke, or heart disease decreased by 10 percent compared to those who never breastfed.
Researchers say the benefits of breastfeeding are also long-lasting since some women in the study had not nursed for almost 35 years.
