Iowa Lawmakers Not Giving Up On Gas Tax Idea
January 29, 2009, 1:22 PM
Iowa legislative leaders say they're still considering a gasoline tax increase even though Governor Chet Culver has made it clear he doesn't favor such a move.
Speaking Thursday with reporters, the Democratic leaders noted that Culver hasn't promised to veto a gas tax increase. That's left them with the impression that the option remains on the table as a way to finance repairs of Iowa's aging roads and bridges.
Culver says tax increases should be avoided during a recession.
House Speaker Pat Murphy of Dubuque say Democrats are working on the issue and have had discussions with Republicans about a possible gas tax increase.
Last year, the idea was dropped after Culver said he'd veto an increase.
