The Silver Lining Of Migraines

November 7, 2008, 3:54 PM by Kelli Grant

The Silver Lining Of Migraines
Some good news for women who suffer with migraines. Those debilitating headaches may actually be protecting you from breast cancer.

A new study shows that those painful piercing headaches may have a silver lining. Researchers found that women with a history of severe migraines have a 30 percent lower risk of getting breast cancer.

This preliminary study couldn't determine the exact connection, but doctors believe it has to do with hormones. Keep in mind, migraine sufferers often take other steps to avoid headaches. That means hormones may not be the only factors involved. Women who suffer from these severe headaches also take more anti-inflammatory medication which has also been tied to a decreased risk.

Headache specialist, Dr. Juline Bryson says, “There may be a link between the estrogen fluctuation that happens in migraine and the fact that many of the cancers that were found to be reduced were estrogen sensitive."

But as researchers try to figure out how to use this latest discovery to help patients - doctors urge migraine sufferers not to have a false sense of security and to continue regular breast cancer screenings.
