49 Other states have similar laws.. But this week the South Dakota Legislature killed Senate Bill 189
which would have made more government records open to the public.
It would have declared that every government record is public unless it's made confidential by state law.
Opponents say it didn't do enough to safeguard government information on private individuals and companies.
Broadcast, print and online news media participate in what's known as Sunshine Week to open a discussion about the importance of open government and freedom of information.
