Romney Wins Iowa Straw Poll
August 13, 2007, 12:13 PM
There was a low turnout at the Iowa Republican Party Straw Poll, and some major candidates skipped it entirely.
Mitt Romney says that doesn't lessen his victory. Romney got nearly twice as many votes yesterday as closest rival Mike Huckabee. Sam Brownback came in third.
Romney says the poll did just what it was designed to do: Let candidates show they have support that could help them win this winter's Iowa caucuses.
For his part, Huckabee says he's pleased with the vote, and he says the candidates who skipped the event, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain, probably knew they wouldn't do well with conservative Iowa voters.
One candidate who didn't do well was former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson, who finished in sixth place. Thompson has said that if he didn't finish in the top two, he'd halt his campaign effort.
