A multi-million dollar underground laboratory is going to be built in South Dakota. The process of turning the mine into a lab started four years ago...and there is still a lot of work to be done until it is complete.
Right now, crews are working to make sure water doesn't reach the 4850 feet level. Water has been rising in the mine since Homestake's former owner, Barrick Gold Corporation, turned off underground pumps.
Once the lab at Homestake is complete, it will be the deepest underground laboratory in the world. Conducting experiments underground can shield the projects from cosmic rays that can sometimes disrupt research. Already, there are a number of scientists interested in working at Homestake.
