Inside KELOLAND: Drought Hits South Dakota

Inside KELOLAND: Drought Hits South Dakota
The drought is taking center stage in the center part of the state and it's affects will ripple across all of KELOLAND.

South Dakotais now one of the driest areas in the entire nation. Fields are drying up and livestock is going hungry. The only other location as dry as South Dakota in the country is along the Mexican border.

Gettysburg Drought

The drought is affecting South Dakota's entire economy from the farm to main street.
It's the worst drought in the area in four years.

Some of the worst conditions can be found near Timber Lake, where lightning started a grassfire which burned more than a thousand acres.

The fire was stopped by a road, which is lucky because the Broken Heart Ranch was threatened. The ranch is actually drier than Timber Lake. Less than three and a-half-inches of moisture has fallen all year. The owners are conserving grass for the cattle and are worried about the water supply drying up.

The drought isn't just effecting farmers and ranchers, but boaters and cold water fish are also feeling the heat.

The drought has destroyed access to lake Oahe and visitors have stopped fishing in the area.

Members of the Army Corps of engineers met with members of the community to find a plan of action to help the economy. The corps says for the most part, their hands are tied but they'll try to help in any way they can.

With South Dakota one of the driest areas in the nation, drought conditions have forced several ranchers to sell off their livestock.

And that's exactly what happened this week in Mobridge.
