Inside KELOLAND: 2010E and Sesquicentennial Events

Classes are wrapping up for many South Dakota students, but work to improve the state’s educational system is just beginning. The 2010 Education Initiative is a sort of road map state leaders looking at the current status of education in the state, where it is going and how to get there. There are three main initiatives: Starting Strong, which targets kids age 3 to grade 3; Finishing Strong, which focuses on making the high school experience rigorous and relevant for students going on to post-secondary education; and Staying Strong, which targets teachers, Native American students and financial resources.

Sioux Falls is celebrating an important milestone this year. It was 150 years ago that land speculators claimed the area that would eventually become Sioux Falls. Plans are already being made for the city’s sesquicentennial celebrations.
