Storm Center Update - Tuesday PM

January 29, 2013, 3:06 PM by Ben Cathey

Many areas in the northeast picked up heavy amounts of snow last night as a deformation band moved in.  But now our big headline is an Arctic blast arriving tonight with strong northwest winds.  The jet stream is undergoing a huge kink and without something to force it out, we’ll be stuck with the cold.

For the rest of today, a few light snow and rain showers are moving in far SE KELOLAND, down by Elk Point and Yankton.  These look to miss Sioux Falls just off to the southeast but we could see some lighter action overnight with wind-blown light snow.
The breeze will be strong for most tonight with a northwest wind.  We’re looking for winds to be 20-35 mph in the Hills and 10-20 mph for Sioux Falls and Aberdeen.  Tomorrow will not be the warmest or prettiest winter day.  We will have mostly cloudy skies and continued strong winds.  Our wind chill will be close to zero for most of the day.  We could also see some scattered snow flurries.
Thursday will be even colder with highs right around zero for Sioux Falls and Pierre.  Aberdeen will be quite a bit colder than that.
The good news is that warmth returns, at least partially, by Friday.  The weekend should be even better as we finally bust out of this deep troughing pattern.  For most of the next week we will be dry.  One more thing to look out for is brutally cold morning in the northeast as deep snow will take its time melting.  Also, our KELOLAND.com website is re-launching starting tomorrow!
