Ice from freezing rain caused travel headaches across much of our region this morning and another event is on the way tomorrow.
First, tonight will be comfortable by January standards. Overcast skies will remain in place so we won’t cool a huge amount. Drizzle could linger through the evening in a few NE spots and freezing fog is possible for some. There is a fair shot at some lighter snow on the western side of the Black Hills as the new snow-maker closes in on central KELOLAND.
The start of your Monday should be mostly quiet apart from morning flurries in the NE. We still expect a snow band to form, given temperatures cooling down enough. There are some changes to talk about for positioning of the heaviest totals. It now looks like the band will move farther north, more like from Miller to Sisseton.
Warmer air earlier in the day will lead to wintry mix southeast of the main snow line. Snow looks to begin in the Pierre area by late afternoon as the system spreads east. Sioux Falls is looking at a late-day chance. We could still see some healthy accumulation by the late overnight hours and through early Tuesday. Three to five inches are possible in a thin band with other getting one to two inches. Winds won’t be as large of an issue as with past storms and the National Weather Service doesn’t have any alerts out at this time.
An Arctic cold front arrives and grips KELOLAND Tuesday night. We will have quiet but very cold weather through Friday. But we do have a warm weekend to look forward to next Saturday and Sunday.
