Storm Center Update - Friday PM

January 25, 2013, 2:29 PM by Scot Mundt

As of 2:00 this afternoon, the temperatures in eastern and northeast North Dakota are below zero.  That air will move into eastern KELOLAND later tonight.  At the same time, central and western South Dakota will fall to the teens and twenties (above zero).  Northwest winds in eastern KELOLAND will continue at ten to twenty miles per hour through the evening, but they’ll become light tonight.

Warmer air will move in for the second half of the weekend, but we’ll remain in the twenties in central and eastern KELOLAND for Saturday.  A storm system to our south will help warm the temperatures in South Dakota for Sunday.  Along with the warmer air, southeast KELOLAND has a chance for a light wintry mix.  The best area to get that is northwest Iowa.  Models vary for precip amounts in this area with as much as a quarter to a third on the American model to as little as one hundredth on the European.  All other areas will stay dry with highs mainly in the thirties in central and eastern South Dakota to the forties in the west.

Another system will move across the central plains Monday into Tuesday.  This one will bring a better chance for everyone to see at least a little bit of snow.  As of now, we have the chances in central and western South Dakota on Monday then moving into the east on Tuesday.  Accumulating snow will be possible out of this one, but exactly who gets what is up in the air.

Temperatures for early next week will be a little above average with highs in the thirties and forties, but more cold weather is on the way by midweek and beyond.
