RC Council Releases Report On Alderman

January 23, 2013, 12:45 PM by Derek Olson

RC Council Releases Report On Alderman
RAPID CITY, SD -

At Tuesday night's City Council Meeting in Rapid City, council members voted to release an investigative report on racist and inflammatory comments a councilman made to a black reporter.

The report centered on a couple of incidents involving Rapid City Alderman Bill Clayton. One complaint about Clayton came from Taisha Walker, a black reporter for a Rapid City news station.  Walker claimed that during a contentious phone interview with Clayton he asked her whether she was an American and suggested deporting her back to Kenya with President Obama.

KELOLAND News spoke with Alderman Jerry Wright Wednesday morning about his reaction to the comments.

"I think that the comments to Miss Walker are totally unacceptable in my book, and totally unacceptable to the vast majority of Rapid City citizens.  Most unfortunate. Bill apologized last night, said he's come a long way since.  I hope he has because I think it was a great discredit to our community," Wright said.

Clayton issued a public apology for the comments and hopes that with the public release of the report, the council will be able to move on.

We'll have more from other members of the city council tonight on KELOLAND News.
